Legendary Animals are the rarest hunts in Red Dead Redemption 2. There are 16 legendary animals to track, each with unique spawn conditions, hunting requirements, and crafting rewards. This guide lists every animal, its location, and what you get for the kill.
How Legendary Animals Work
Legendary Animals appear after you reach Chapter 2 and start hunting. They are marked with a gold question mark on the map. To spawn them, you need to:
- Reach the correct region.
- Hunt in the correct time of day.
- Have proper weapon readiness (clean shots for perfect pelts).
Each legendary animal drops a legendary pelt that can be sold or crafted at the Trapper.

Hunting Tips
Use the Right Weapon
For a perfect pelt, use the correct weapon for each animal:
- Small animals: Varmint Rifle.
- Medium animals: Repeater.
- Large animals: Rifle.
- Massive animals: Rifle or Shotgun with slugs.
Aim for headshots on legendary animals. A body shot may kill the animal but ruin the pelt.
Use Cover Scent Lotion
Cover Scent Lotion increases your chances of getting close to skittish legendary animals like the fox and moose.
Save Your Game
Legendary animals are one-time spawns. Save before each hunt and reload if you make a mistake.
Use Dead Eye
Dead Eye is essential for landing headshots on moving targets. Activate Dead Eye, mark the head, and fire.
Crafting Rewards
Each legendary pelt can be crafted into unique items at the Trapper. Some of the best rewards:
- Bear Coat: -50% cold weather damage.
- Panther Range Gloves: improved sniper accuracy.
- Coyote Hat: -20% cold weather damage.
- Elk Coat: -30% cold weather damage.
Trophy Values
Selling legendary pelts to the Trapper gives you $30-$50 per pelt. Crafting legendary items gives you more value in the long run. Always craft before selling.
Common Mistakes
- Don't use explosive ammo on legendary animals. The pelt is ruined.
- Don't hunt legendary animals without saving first.
- Don't ignore the time of day requirement. Some only spawn at dawn.
- Don't use a Bow without small game arrows on small animals.
With this guide, you will be able to track and kill every legendary animal in Red Dead Redemption 2 and craft the unique gear they unlock.
