Beacons are one of the most powerful items in Minecraft. They provide status effects to players within their range, making them essential for any serious base. This guide covers how to build, power, and use beacons for maximum benefit.

How Beacons Work

Beacons are blocks that provide status effects to players within a certain range. To activate a beacon:

  1. Build a pyramid of Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, or Netherite blocks under the beacon.
  2. The pyramid can be 1-4 levels high.
  3. The larger the pyramid, the larger the range and the more effects available.

The beacon beam shoots upward and can be seen from far away, making it easy to find your base.

Materials Needed

To build a fully powered beacon, you need:

  • 1 Beacon (crafted from 3 Obsidian + 5 Glass + 1 Nether Star).
  • 164 Mineral Blocks (Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, or Netherite) for a Level 4 pyramid.

The exact number of blocks depends on the pyramid shape.

Beacon Pyramid Shapes

There are three pyramid shapes:

Single Layer (Level 1)

  • 9 mineral blocks in a 3x3.
  • Range: 20 blocks.
  • Status effect: 1 choice from 5.

Two Layers (Level 2)

  • 34 mineral blocks in a 5x5 + 3x3 hollow.
  • Range: 30 blocks.
  • Status effect: 1 choice from 5.

Three Layers (Level 3)

  • 83 mineral blocks in a 7x7 + 5x5 + 3x3 hollow.
  • Range: 40 blocks.
  • Status effects: 2 choices from 5.

Four Layers (Level 4)

  • 164 mineral blocks in a 9x9 + 7x7 + 5x5 + 3x3 hollow.
  • Range: 50 blocks.
  • Status effects: 2 choices from 5.

How to Build the Pyramid

To build a Level 4 pyramid:

  1. Place a 9x9 layer of mineral blocks.
  2. On top of the 9x9, place a 7x7 layer (centered).
  3. On top of the 7x7, place a 5x5 layer (centered).
  4. On top of the 5x5, place a 3x3 layer (centered).
  5. Place the beacon on top of the 3x3 layer.

The beacon should be 1 block above the 3x3 layer. The pyramid can be made of any combination of Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, or Netherite blocks.

Status Effects

The beacon provides the following status effects:

Speed

Increases movement speed. Essential for travel and exploration.

Haste

Increases mining speed. Essential for mining and resource gathering.

Jump Boost

Increases jump height. Useful for climbing and exploration.

Regeneration

Heals the player over time. Essential for combat and survival.

Resistance

Reduces incoming damage. Essential for combat and survival.

Strength

Increases melee damage. Essential for combat.

Best Beacon Combinations

The Miner

  • Haste II
  • Speed II
  • Jump Boost II

This combination is essential for mining and resource gathering.

The Combat

  • Strength II
  • Resistance II
  • Regeneration II

This combination is essential for combat and survival.

The All-Around

  • Haste II
  • Resistance II
  • Jump Boost II
  • Speed II

This combination is the most versatile.

How to Choose Effects

To choose effects:

  1. Place the beacon.
  2. Open the beacon interface (right-click or use the UI).
  3. Insert an Emerald, Diamond, Gold Ingot, Iron Ingot, or Netherite Ingot to power the effect selection.
  4. Choose the desired effect.

The mineral used to power the effect selection is consumed.

Beacon Beam Colors

The beacon beam color can be changed by placing stained glass on top of the beacon:

  • White Stained Glass = White Beam
  • Orange Stained Glass = Orange Beam
  • Magenta Stained Glass = Magenta Beam
  • Light Blue Stained Glass = Light Blue Beam
  • Yellow Stained Glass = Yellow Beam
  • Lime Stained Glass = Lime Beam
  • Pink Stained Glass = Pink Beam
  • Gray Stained Glass = Gray Beam
  • Light Gray Stained Glass = Light Gray Beam
  • Cyan Stained Glass = Cyan Beam
  • Purple Stained Glass = Purple Beam
  • Blue Stained Glass = Blue Beam
  • Brown Stained Glass = Brown Beam
  • Green Stained Glass = Green Beam
  • Red Stained Glass = Red Beam
  • Black Stained Glass = Black Beam

Place the stained glass on top of the beacon to change the beam color.

How to Find a Nether Star

To craft a beacon, you need a Nether Star. To get a Nether Star:

  1. Build a Wither (3 Wither Skeleton Skulls on top of a T-shape of Soul Sand).
  2. The Wither will spawn and attack you.
  3. Defeat the Wither to drop the Nether Star.

Wither Skeleton Skulls are dropped by Wither Skeletons in Nether Fortresses.

How to Get the Mineral Blocks

To build a beacon pyramid, you need mineral blocks:

Iron Blocks

9 Iron Ingots = 1 Iron Block. Mine Iron Ore and smelt it into Ingots.

Gold Blocks

9 Gold Ingots = 1 Gold Block. Mine Gold Ore and smelt it into Ingots.

Emerald Blocks

9 Emeralds = 1 Emerald Block. Mine Emerald Ore (only in Extreme Hills biomes).

Diamond Blocks

9 Diamonds = 1 Diamond Block. Mine Diamond Ore at Y=-58.

Netherite Blocks

9 Netherite Ingots = 1 Netherite Block. Combine Netherite Ingots with the Smithing Table.

The cheapest option is Iron Blocks, since Iron is abundant.

Best Locations for Beacons

The best locations for beacons are:

  1. In a central location at your base - covers most of the area.
  2. In a mining area - covers the mining range.
  3. In a farming area - covers the farm range.
  4. Near an End Portal - covers the End entry area.

For maximum coverage, place the beacon at the highest point of your base.

How to Extend Beacon Range

The beacon range can be extended by:

  1. Building a larger pyramid (Level 4 = 50 block range).
  2. Building the beacon higher in the air.
  3. Using multiple beacons in the same area.

Each beacon has its own range, so multiple beacons can cover larger areas.

Common Mistakes

  • Don't use a non-pyramid shape. The pyramid must be hollow inside.
  • Don't place the beacon on the wrong level. It must be 1 block above the pyramid.
  • Don't forget to power the effect selection. Use a mineral item.
  • Don't use the wrong blocks. Only Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, and Netherite blocks work.

Best Beacon Pyramid Builds

The Cheap Base Beacon

Use Iron Blocks for the pyramid. 164 Iron Blocks = 1476 Iron Ingots. Mining Iron Ore and smelting it is the cheapest option.

The Aesthetic Base Beacon

Use Emerald Blocks for the pyramid. 164 Emerald Blocks = 1476 Emeralds. The Emerald Blocks look the most aesthetic.

The Functional Base Beacon

Use a mix of Diamond and Iron Blocks. Diamond Blocks for the top layers and Iron Blocks for the bottom.

Final Tips

  • Use the cheapest mineral blocks for the pyramid (Iron).
  • Build the beacon in a central location for maximum coverage.
  • Use stained glass to customize the beam color.
  • Combine multiple status effects for maximum benefit.

With this guide, you will build a fully powered beacon that provides powerful status effects to your entire base.
